How have you worked with reference checks in the past? And what were the drawbacks?

Hadley: "We include reference checks as part of our executive search service. In the past, we've done them in a few ways: manually over the phone, through Zoom, and through a Google form. 

It was labor-intensive and time-consuming and required proofreading and editing to make sure the document was well formatted and the notes accurately captured the reference’s information."

What were you looking for in a better solution?

Hadley: "Implementing Refapp was incredibly quick and easy. I gave a brief introduction to the team and shared the Refapp training videos and a procedural one-pager. Once our team members set up their accounts, the integration with Workable was up and running with pre-built reference checking templates and questionnaires for our most common types of roles. 

"We have found the Workable integration to be extremely helpful. At Edgility, we do searches for similar types of roles, for example, Executive Directors and CEOs, so working with an automated process and reusable templates available directly from our daily workflow is a huge benefit.”

A short description of the workflow:

Hadley: "With the click of a button in Workable, we initiate a reference check on a candidate and select the template we want to use. Candidates are then automatically prompted to submit their reference details and questionnaires are sent to the references, all branded. When the responses are submitted, we receive a link in Workable to the professional report.”

How did the Edgility team feel about the new way of working?

Hadley: “The team has really embraced it! There are always different levels of comfort with new technologies and platforms. However, the team adopted it quickly and provided great feedback on the usability, reliability, and efficiency of the new process.

“Another benefit is that the reference report is a live document. This means that you can send a client 2 out of 3 completed reference checks and know that the 3rd one will be populated as soon as it's completed.”

What is the impact on time and efficiency? 

Hadley: ”With Refapp, our reference checks are done in a fraction of the time they used to take, and we are able to get them to clients faster, without deprioritizing other parts of the important offer stage.

"Since integrating Refapp with our other tools, we have seen a reduction in our time to hire of up to a week."
